"The aspect of yoga that I enjoy the most is breathing. It calms me down and allows me to cope with any stresses that come my way."

Kanika is a yoga teacher, fitness instructor and life coach rolled into one attractive package. Her class is rooted in classical yoga, but she improvises as per the needs of her student. I have been working with her for the last two years, and I would recommend her highly to anyone looking to make a lifestyle change. As a 40 something male, with a stressful job, and no exercise routine, I thought of yoga as something that would give me a few hours of physical activity a week, and one that I could do in the comfort of my home. A friend recommended a teacher, and I was on my way. I guess you have to be lucky with your teacher - I was. To begin with she was the most graceful person I have ever seen. A dancer's body, and a dancer's grace. I do my yoga with my eyes closed, but I would welcome any time when I would have them open so that I could watch her. Not with lust, but with admiration. The aspect of yoga that I enjoy the most is breathing. It calms me down and allows me to cope with any stresses that come my way. My teacher saw this and encouraged me to go deeper into my breath. In the last few classes I had, we were spending more time on breathing and meditation than anything else. My teacher would help me with visualising things and giving me a point of focus. And somewhere in the breathing, what worked strongly for me was the ability to surrender completely to my teacher.

“I learned how to let go not only while doing my asanas but also in my life”

I have always liked yoga besides dance and also been practicing on and off. But I only truly understood the essence and the nuances of it once I started practicing with Kanika. Who, I must say is a very experienced and enlightened yoga teacher. I joined her classes last year and have found subtle yet meaningful changes in my life and in my body and while performing my asanas. I learned how to let go not only while doing my asanas but also in my life. How not to feel guilty of anything and to accept the difficult changes occurring in my life and how to be present. She introduced me to Mooji and EFT which have been valuable contributions and I do value her friendship and guidance. Nevertheless, the positive changes due to yoga are many but hard to explain yet I know it has been profound and I feel confident like never before.

“My thoughts are clearer, my happiness, and most importantly my contentedness, with life is unlike anything I have ever felt before, and I have the tools to continue to grow in this ever changing world.”

I have been in India for over two months now, and though I came here to work with a human rights NGO, the most I have learned has been from my time outside of the office! My sister has been interested in yoga for some time, and tried telling me about some more spiritual oriented ideals, which I was skeptical about. I had done yoga a few times in Canada during high school, but it left no lasting impression. I decided to do yoga when I was in India though, as this is the origin of the practice and it would be a good way to keep fit. I found "the yoga class" which was close to my apartment . Quite close in fact, about a 1 minute walk! The teacher, Kanika, seemed quite pleasant and even after the first class, I could tell this was an experience unlike anything I had before. I went in with a very open mind and an interest in learning about meditation, and it was this mental disposition which led to a fantastic experience! After a few weeks of doing yoga three times a week, I could notice that after I left, for the next few hours, I was more relaxed, content, was smiling for no reason, and more outgoing! This feeling was compounded when I followed Kanika's advice by writing down the things you were thankful for, and to reflect on the people or experiences that were teachers in your life. Also, due to the meditation, I was able to have better awareness of the stream of consciousness of thoughts, and to control them! My emotional state also became continually elevated, so I would be feeling from good to fantastic, instead of my usual so-so to great. (I was generally a happy person even before this experience!) All of this was just after a month! Ah, and we can't forget my vastly improved flexibility, strength, and good health! Truly accepting and enjoying yoga, and also having the vegetarian culture of India, enhanced my healthy eating tendencies and it reflected in my energy levels! Now, after 2 months of yoga, I can honestly say this choice to do yoga in India has fundamentally changed my life. I was not a spiritual person before I came here, I had no expectations, only an open mind and a love for learning. What I am leaving with is an infinite appreciation for life and the interconnectedness of everything, a resolve to share this love and open my heart to any and all I meet, and a love for myself that stems from a better understanding of what I value and how I want to be. My thoughts are clearer, my happiness, and most importantly my contentedness, with life is unlike anything I have ever felt before, and I have the tools to continue to grow in this ever changing world. A good teacher is integral to such learning,With an open heart, mind and body, a little time and dedication and a good teacher, yoga can significantly alter your life for the better! =D

“The biggest benefit was that I have not suffered from common cold, fever, influenza for last 1 year – this has never happened before.”

I started doing Yoga in July 2014 & have learnt a lot through it – most importantly the fact that it is important to have a grip over one’s mind & life. Also it is important to slow things down & spend more effort in doing them properly – something on the lines of “focussing on your karma with no eye on the expected results”. Moreover, the biggest benefit was that I have not suffered from common cold, fever, influenza for last 1 year – this has never happened before. It is all thanks to the breathing exercises & hence clearing my sinus, lungs to certain extent. Thank You Yoga & Kanika a lot for this.

"She has been the best things that happened for my body! So thank you kanika for all that you do! "

I saw kanika few years ago at a farm house in Delhi. She had come to make us do start a session on yoga. Bright and enthused I tried doing a few and gave up. A MRI last year indicated a cyst and a few bumps on spine. My paranoid self-took offer and I gave up on many activities I loved at the doctor's advice – photography and travelling. A year later I realised that I was becoming a caricature of fear. Kanika met me again by chance and asked me to come to her yoga class. My fearful self-went the first day and she made me at ease gently guiding me. I liked her style of teaching so decided to continue. We made a lot of progress initially thanks to her effort and gentle nature. Saturday yoga class became the best time of my life. A few months later I reached a mental block. She kept egging me to do more but I won’t budge, the progress was slow and slower. She spoke of my fears which made things worse as in my heart I knew she was right but my right brain won’t let me off.She has been more than welcoming in her manner, enthusiastic so why weren’t we progressing? Was it me other? Should I find another teacher? As I sat down watching the sunset in my beautiful terrace garden last night I realized I was looking at this relationship from outside instead of inside outside. Yes, my body couldn’t do more but my mind was calmer day by day. The extreme panic attacks I used to have had subsided and people commented how calm I was in very tense situations at work and life. I travelled to Mexico a journey of 28 hours something which I would have never thought of doing after the diagnosis. A second trip to Jalandhar alone and calm like the Buddha. All of a sudden life was changing I was getting invited out to parties and was inviting others to mine quite comfortably. I who could not sit down was able to sit for 15 minutes each day was making my leg go up 90 degree. Most of us take these small things for granted but for someone who has been so filled with dread these were major accomplishment. Was it our discussions on Mooji, life, her own teachings which made a difference I don’t know? Somewhere my brain was registering all she was saying. Now when I get up the first thing I do is are my asanas, each one slowly like Kanika taught me focusing on the breath for breath alone is what determines our life. I know I would like to continue with her, for she will force me to do thing which I will resist. Perhaps I will learn only 3 asana a year or maybe I will do a surya namaskar who know?A person like me who has kept a tight leash on her life doesn’t let go easily. She has been the best things that happened for my body! So thank you kanika for all that you do!

“With the proper guidance I actually have started feeling the inner strength in myself”

The child goes to the mother to find love, the patient goes to the doctor to find relief from the illness, the poor goes to the rich to get alms, the rich goes to the temple and prays so that there money stays protected. Everyone has a reason, a reason to live……………….I wanted to go to yoga class to find lost Vineet! To find those few minutes of relaxation where I can talk to myself and no one else. To find the best friend within myself , to understand my body, my likes, my dislikes, my moods.. to understand the nature and behaviour of my body and with a hope of doing something good for me with an attitude of positivity. To understand the language through which my body can talk to me. Starting the yoga class with Kanika has been an experience in itself. It all started with a telephonic conversation and there I was in the basement hall ready to learn the first letters of my language. Initial days are always hard to start with but today after doing 11 to 12 classes I have begun to feel the flow in my body.. The letters have started turning into words and with the proper guidance I actually have started feeling the inner strength in myself..The body movements are not just movements but are answers to the questions pondering in my mind..It is as if my body is dancing. You feel the body floating in the air. I remember one day I asked Kanika whether she likes doing the class with music and she said her breath is her MUSIC.. I might not have realized it by now…but if I keep doing yoga then someday I might realize the depth in the lines she said. I like the encouragement given by Kanika in between the exercises and her attitude full of positivity. Her willingness to teach us more. She is always ready to answer our questions. At such a young age she has a lot of experience and depth.

One week spent at theyogaclass gave me the motivation needed to keep practicing, and I learned a lot of poses to work on specific problem areas of my body.

I first learned yoga at theyogaclass during my one-month stay in India in 2010. We were a group of four or five, and Kanika taught us the basics of Sivananda sequence, breathing and relaxation. She was always encouraging us to give a little more, to go that extra mile, but at the same time she taught us to listen to our bodies and to observe the mental and physical changes. Every class was challenging but fun and very balanced. When I returned home I was taking yoga classes here and there, I stopped, started, stopped and started again, until I had a chance to come to Delhi again and take individual classes with Kanika in 2012. She is a great teacher. She pays great attention to alignment, focus and safety in the asanas. She is very generous, sharing her incredible home-cooked food and her knowledge about balanced diet, healthy lifestyle, Indian history and culture. She takes time to know her students and to understand their needs. I wasn’t very interested in the spiritual aspects of yoga, but I wanted to improve my flexibility and strength and get back into practice. One week spent at theyogaclass gave me the motivation needed to keep practicing, and I learned a lot of poses to work on specific problem areas of my body. I am working my way up to a headstand and I am looking forward to come to theyogaclass again!

The Yoga Class is an excellent place to develop and grow your practice,

and get a deeper understanding of the nuance and technique of both asanas and pranayama. Kanika has been a wonderful teacher and guide, giving time and individual attention to all of us in her class to help us achieve things we thought our bodies, and minds, incapable of. I highly recommend her class to serious practitioners in any tradition of Yoga.
